Congratulations to Rylee Damgaard for being chosen to have Treats with the Principal! Rylee was chosen because she consistently Treats People Right and Does the Right Thing! Great work Rylee! Thanksgiving HomeworkBecause Thanksgiving break is quite lengthy this year, I am going to be sending home some homework. Please look for a Thanksgiving journal to write in, your child's Dr. Seuss bag for reading practice, and a problem solving activity for math. Of course homework is always encouraged but not required. For students who bring back all three homework items (journal, Dr. Seuss bag, and problem solving activity) I will award them with an extra recess! I will consider the journal to be complete if there are three or more entries. A journal is much like a diary. Use it to write about daily happenings. Beanie Baby Reading StrategiesWe have now covered ALL of the Beanie Baby reading strategies and have had SO much fun! Plus we have learned a lot about reading! I'm going to keep the Beanie Babies here at school for a while yet so we can continue to review what each one taught us. Ask your child to talk with you about the Beanie's below. Have your child tell you what he/she has learned from each one. If your child has trouble remembering, scroll down to find the posters that were shared on the blog a while back. Story Time With Miss BensonYesterday we went over to Miss Benson's room for a Thanksgiving story. The kids loved seeing her room! Though our rooms adjoin, we've never actually been over there. While reading the story we stopped a few times to check for understanding. Do you do this with your child? If not, give it a try. After reading a few pages, stop and ask your child to tell you what just happened in the story. This is a great way to informally check reading comprehension. December Snack CalendarThe December snack calendar has been posted under the Snack Calendar tab. Please note that not everyone is on the December calendar. There's just too many days off in December!
During our daily writing time we have been working on making Thanksgiving books. The books are patterned off of a popular children's book, Thanks for Thanksgiving. I love seeing what the children are thankful for and I'm sure you will too! When your child brings home his/her book, please read it together. Share it with family during Thanksgiving as these books are very special. They are definitely something you will want to keep! Beanie BabiesThank you to many of you who shared your Beanie Babies with me! Because of your generosity, our reading project is off and running! So far we've learned about four different Beanie Babies and how they can teach us different reading strategies. The children are LOVING this project! Ask your child to tell you about the different animals and what they have learned from them.
Today your child is bringing home his/her Dr. Seuss bag. Please set aside time to read the books together. And as always, please return your child's bag on Monday. The books in the bag are many of your child's reading group books so it's VERY important that they are returned on time! The paper books are to keep at home. Thanks!
Yesterday, as a way to culminate our unit on liquids and solids, we made homemade ice cream. We talked about how the liquid became a solid and how that happened. As always, we had a great time!
Most of our science work was recorded in a science journal, which will be coming home very soon. Though I know you can't keep everything, this is definitely a keeper! After all, it has pictures of Mr. Martinez in it.........need I say more??!! Congratulations to Braylyn Coats and Izak Espinoza for being chosen to have Treats With the Principal. Students who treat people right and do the right thing are selected for this honor! Great work Izak and Braylyn! A new student will be chosen each month.
