The February snack calendar is done and has been posted under Snack Calendars.
Thank you to everyone who sent extra snacks. We now have plenty! Book OrderThe book orders are due next Thursday, January 28. Keep in mind that you can order online or by turning in the order form. I think this might be our last book order as there is very little interest in ordering books. Plus, the book fair will be coming soon and we will want to support this event sponsored by the Lewis Central PTA. MathWe've been practicing subtraction by counting forward and backward. Please take some time to review counting backward with your child. Though most can do it, they aren't very automatic at it. Thanks!
I am almost finished reading The Boxcar Children to the class. Every day, during snack, I read a chapter from a chapter book. When I was a kid this was one of my favorite times of the day, and I hope the same is true for your child. As I was reading the book to the class several of the students started telling me that they had watched the movie on Net Flex. Now watching movies at school is NOT one of my favorite things but since the movie accompanies a book that we are reading, we are going to watch it. After seeing the kids' enthusiasm, I started to poke around on the internet to see what else I could find that was Boxcar related. I stumbled across this website and thought I should share! New Writing UnitWe have started a new unit in writing called Opinion Writing. Students are learning what an opinion is, how to state their opinion, and how to support their opinion with 2-3 reasons. The students used their toy collections to write their opinions regarding which toy was the best and why. They LOVED doing this! Pictures of their collections are below. Pacer TestCongratulations to the students below for making the goal on the Pacer Test! Music ProgramMark your calendars for March 1st. That's the date of our upcoming music program! Please keep in mind that there are SEVERAL first grade music programs so don't be confused by the dates! We are March 1st at 7:00 pm. Valentine PartyOur Valentine's Day party will be held on February 10 from 2:30-3:30. We will be exchanging Valentine cards at the party so please plan to send 23 cards. They can be homemade or store bought. Please have your child address the cards as they are more than capable of doing this job! :) If you would like to send a little Valentine treat, please tape it to your child's valentine cards. To help your child address his/her cards, I have included a class list (below). Your child will also need a Valentine box to gather his/her Valentine cards in. I have many fond memories of making my box with my mom! You can do whatever you want for your child's box, but be sure to clearly display your child's name on it. If you are unable to make a box with your child, please let me know and I will help your child make one at school. The same is true regarding Valentine cards. If you are unable to purchase them, please let me know and I will take care of this for you. Class List: Alyssa, Brooklynn, Blayden, Braylyn, Cate, Clay, Corey, Emma, Evanna, Gavin, Grace, Izak, Irelynn, Kole, Landen, Lily, Mason, Michael, Morgan, Preston, Rylee, Taylor, Van Extra Snacks NeededWe are still in need of some extra snacks! If we don't have snack it's like the end of the world.................................................... Please help!
Reading HomeworkToday the kids are bringing home their Dr. Seuss bags. Please take some time to read with your child. Our winter testing is going to start next week so the added reading practice would be helpful! Special VisitorToday Mr. Martinez came to visit. Talk about excited!!! The kids were BEYOND happy to see him. In a couple of weeks he will be able to substitute teach so maybe we will see him again, as as OFFICIAL teacher!!! Winter ConferencesOur next set of conferences will be held on February 8 and 11. Please return the form I sent home asking you for times that would work for your family. I want to make the master schedule early next week so please let me know what works for you! If I don't hear from you, I will have to chose a time for you, and that doesn't usually work very well. If you have lost the form, feel free to email me 3 choices that work for you. The schedule for Feburary 8 (4-8:00 pm) is nearly full so please choose a time on February 11 (8am-8pm). Thanks! ArtThis week, during Art class, the kids learned to make snowflakes. When I picked them up they were SO excited to show me their art creations. As you can see from the picture below, Mason had a special way to dispay his snowflake!
Today our class joined with Miss Benson's kindergarten class for story time. Miss Benson read the book Snow Friends. When the story was over we did a mini lesson on how to retell a story. As alwlays, the kids LOVE getting together with Miss Benson and her class. Once the story was over the kids paired up for a little buddy reading, followed by a snowman art project. It was a great way to spend Friday morning! Our "extra" snack tub is running low and we could use some snack donations. If you are willing to donate, you may send as little or as much as you like. We don't need enough for the whole class.
Most mornings, between our literacy block and math, we take a brain break. This is one of my favorites, mostly because it was popular in the 80's. Mrs. Kreft calls it my theme song! LOL Band-Aids Needed!I am looking for some donations of Band-Aids, yes Band-Aids! As you can probably imagine, we go through LOTS! The nurses office provides some but it can be a hassle to keep going down to ask for more. If you would be wiling to donate a box or two, I would sure appreciate it!
The Valentine parties at Kreft will be held on February 10. Our classes party will be from 2:30-3:30. If you would be interested in organizing the party, donating supplies, or coming to help, please let me know. Thanks!
Does Your Child Know How To Tie His/Her Shoes?Though we are having a GREAT time playing in the snow, some of us are having trouble tying our shoes once we get inside. If your child doesn't know how to tie yet, please work on this. First graders are capable of tying. It just takes perseverance and lots of practice.
